Two of the area’s biggest surprises this season have been longtime neighborhood rivals, Godwin Heights and Kelloggsville. After a combined four wins in 2024, these two Wyoming area schools have posted a combined 11-3 record entering Friday night, with both teams sitting on the positive side of the postseason picture. The most anticipated game in this rivalry since 2017 did not disappoint, with each offense flexing their muscle. In the end, it was Godwin Heights who was able to prevail, 41-22.

Early in the first quarter, the Rockets got on the scoreboard first. Cameron Dunbar got loose, powering into the end zone for the opening score. Godwin would respond on their next drive, taking just two minutes to find the end zone. Julius Hoskins, a junior, carried the football for the equalizing score. Kelloggsville jumped back in front late in the first quarter on another scoring run from Dunbar.

The star duel continued when Hoskins brought Godwin right back with a second touchdown carry early in the second quarter. Fireworks continued when sophomore phenom Martellis Forest found Isziah Walker for a passing touchdown, extending the Wolverines lead. A late interception by Taijson Allen kept the Rockets off the scoreboard before halftime.

A short 3-yard touchdown plunge by Hoskins allowed Godwin to really seize control on their opening drive of the second half. They followed that up with a huge stop on fourth down with three minutes to go in the third quarter.

Just moments into the fourth, Hoskins’ fourth rushing score iced this game for the Wolverines. Although two more touchdowns were scored, including an 18-yard quarterback keeper from Forest, it was Hoskins’ fourth touchdown that gave Coach Kimball’s Wolverines the breathing room they needed.

With this 41-22 win, Godwin Heights is now 7-1, their highest win total since 2017 (7-3). Next week, they will take on Belding in a battle of undefeated OK Silver clubs. The winner of that game will secure the league title outright. A victory in Week 9 would give Godwin their first league championship since winning the OK Blue back in 1989. Kelloggsville (5-3) will look to solidify their playoff spot next week when they face Holland.
