The South Christian Sailors, like the rest of us, had heard how Grand Rapids Catholic Central was the top dog in the OK Gold, and how Cedar Springs had become the favorite to knock them off. After tonight’s performance, the Sailors have positioned themselves to have a chance at the OK Gold crown, as they remain perfect in 2020. They won this one 32-14.
South Christian was able to win this game in large part, because of the large lead they created early in the contest. They scored the first seventeen points in this game, building a lead that Cedar Springs could never overcome. First, Daniel Possett ran in a two-yard touchdown with just over three minutes to go in the first quarter. Two minutes later, Ty Rynbrandt and Elliott Grashuis connected on a forty-three yard touchdown pass on South’s first play of that drive. Jeff Herrema booted a 33-yard field goal to make it 17-0 South Christian with 7:20 to go in the first half.
Cedar Springs was able to get on the board when Da’Monte Barnett ran fifty-eight yards to the end zone. The two-point conversion brought the Red Hawks within nine points. The Sailors would respond and extend the lead back to sixteen when Rynbrandt found Eli Smith for a twenty-yard touchdown. The score would remain 24-8 at the half.
The defense on both sides stepped up in the second half and limited the scoring. South Christian scored the lone third quarter touchdown on a seven yard touchdown pass from Rynbrandt to Smith that capped off a twelve-play, sixty-seven yard drive. They would also connect for the two-point conversion. Cedar Springs, meanwhile, got six points in the fourth quarter on a touchdown run by Jeremy Campione.
The Sailors only outgained Cedar Springs 295-234, but they were efficient through the air. Rynbrandt finished the day 26/34 for 261 yards and three touchdowns.
Cedar Springs (2-2) will look to get back in the win column when they travel to Houseman Field to face Ottawa Hills. South Christian (4-0) will visit Middleville next Friday night in a game that will be broadcast LIVE on MSR.
