The Kelloggsville Rockets were grounded for the second straight week on Thursday. This time, they fell to Ionia, 44-8.

Ionia got things started with a pair of touchdown drives. First, Ethan Bowen rushed for a 1-yard score. He completed the Octopus with a conversion run. On their next drive, Bowen found Mason Doty for a 45-yard touchdown. Kelloggsville would score their only touchdown at the end of the quarter, as Zach Zerfas and Camron Townsend connected on a 79-yard touchdown strike. Zerfas would find Reginald McCaleb III on the conversion, trimming the deficit to 14-8.

Ionia would score 14 points in the second, and eight in each of the final two quarters, ballooning the final margin of victory. Ethan Bowen finished with 82 rushing yards, 101 passing yards, and 4 total touchdowns. Mason Doty was the recipient on both scores. Ionia rushed for 274 yards as a team.

Kelloggsville saw Zack Zerfas finish 14/23 passing for 176 yards and a touchdown. He was the Rockets’ leading rusher with 43 yards on 12 carries, though he was sacked six times. Camron Townsend had four catches, turning them into 112 yards. Brendan Tuinstra had a team-high 5 catches, racking up 23 yards. Tuinstra was also the Rockets’ leading tackler with 9.

Next week, Ionia will face Lansing Sexton in their CAAC White opener. Kelloggsville will start OK Silver action against Belding, a team that beat Ionia 46-14 in their season opener.
