The Calvin Christian Squires entered Week 2 off a thrilling victory against St Louis. This week, they took on the Tigers of Muskegon Heights. First-year head coach Steve VanDam maintained his perfect record on Thursday night, as the Squires defeated the Tigers 42-20.

Just snaps into the contest, Calvin Christian struck first. Jake Newenhouse capped off a quick scoring drive with a 2-yard touchdown plunge. The Squires would fail their extra point attempt. Before the first quarter concluded, Muskegon Heights answered back. Anthony Floyd finished off a 65-yard touchdown march with a 10-yard carry into the end zone. The score was deadlocked after the first quarter, 6-6.

In the second quarter, there was just one touchdown. Paul Bouma IV, the gunslinger for the Squires, used his legs on a 1-yard quarterback keeper. This gave Calvin Christian a 12-6 halftime advantage.

The third quarter started with more Bouma for the victors. First, he used his legs again on a 1-yard run. With ninety seconds left in the third, Bouma found James Daniels on a 15-yard touchdown pass. A successful conversion by Daniels gave him an Octopus, and it brought the lead up to 26-6.

G’Nari Davis finally stopped the run for the Tigerse, as he shot through the Calvin Christian defense on his way to a 48-yard touchdown sprint. Calvin Christian would take just forty seconds to respond, as Bouma and Matt Elderkin connected on a 48-yard touchdown and conversion.

Muskegon Heights would have one more scoring drive, as Floyd found the end zone a second time. Calvin Christian finished the scoring with a 10-yard toss from Bouma to Elderkin.

Paul Bouma IV finished this game 13/24 passing for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jake Newenhouse paced the Squires on the ground with 156 yards. Muskegon Heights saw G’Nari Davis (63) and Anthony Floyd (62) nearly match each other on the ground.

With this victory, Calvin Christian already has the most victories (2) in a season since their 6-4 playoff team in 2016. They will go for a third straight victory when they face Parkway Christian next week. Muskegon Heights slides to 0-2. The Tigers will face Detroit Edison next week.
