The Tigers and the Wildcats began their 2022 seasons squaring off in a SWMFL-I matchup. After a slow first quarter, the game picked up offensively. In the end, a 22-point run for Gobles proved to be the difference, as they defeated Marcellus 30-13.

Eli DeYoung got the Tigers offense roaring in the first quarter. He scored the only touchdown of the frame on a 13-yard keeper. Tristan Harbaugh added a two-point conversion, and Gobles led 8-0. Early in the second quarter, Marcellus responded. Cole Thornburgh carried the ball across the goal line for a 4-yard score. A failed conversion left the Wildcats behind by two points.

Mason Mansfield broke free on a 44-yard touchdown run in response for Gobles. Before the half concluded, DeYoung was gone once more. This seven-yard scurry would give the Tigers a 22-6 halftime lead.

Gobles added one more touchdown on the third scoring carry of the game for DeYoung. He would finish this game with 180 yards rushing, 235 all purpose yards, and three touchdowns. Marcellus concluded tonight’s scoring with a 27-yard pass from Parker Adams to Nathan Mihills.

In addition to DeYoung, Mason Mansfield topped the century mark for Gobles. Mansfield finished with 113 yards rushing. Connor Witt anchored the Tigers defense with 10 tackles, as they held Marcellus to 147 yards of offense.

Parker Adams finished 5/12 for 80 yards as the Wildcats’ gunslinger. Dawsen Lehew led Marcellus with 41 rushing yards, and added 26 yards on one catch. Cole Thornburgh scored a rushing touchdown, but also added a team-high 7 tackles.

Next week, Gobles will continue SWMFL-I play with a matchup against Martin. Marcellus will take another league foe on as well, as they see Fennville.
