The MHSAA High School Bowling Season is in full swing. Plenty of area action over the past few weeks, recapped below.

BOYS BOWLING

Allendale def West Catholic 29-1: The Falcons won easily over WC on Wednesday evening. They started out hot, winning the first Baker game 235-105. They proceeded to win the final three games, losing just one individual match. Sean Jenkins (201), Chandler Selk (168), Peyton Selk (165) and Nick Love (163) led the way for Allendale.

BC Lakeview def Otsego 20-10: The Bulldogs took the first Baker game against Lakeview, but lost the second by only eight pins to see their lead slip to 6-4 heading into the regular games. In the regular games, they lost the first set 7-2 with each match going down to the 10th frame. In the second set, three Lakeview bowlers broke 200 to secure the win.

Big Rapids def Fremont 22-8: The Packers suffered a defeat against the Cardinals over this most recent weekend. Andrew Lyon (159) and Jacob Walker (158) led the Fremont efforts in defeat.

East Grand Rapids def FHN 27-3: The Pioneers dominated FHN in their first match of the season. Corbin Olsson (236-205) and Gavin Bishop (201-208) each posted tremendous scores for EGR, as did Michael Colombo (234-166). FHN saw three 200+ scores, thrown by Colin Doolittle (224), Carson Hommes (211) and Chris Ashley (205).

East Kentwood def Lee 27-3: The Falcons had little trouble with Lee in a non-league bout. Ben Schraeger (179-171) and Nick Boomstra (181-184) secured a pair of points, while Dylan Gresley posted a team-high 225. Joel Pablo led Lee with a 214 game.

Fremont def Central Montcalm 29-1: The Packers defeated the Hornets last weekend with a strong team showing. Trent Koomen posted a personal-best 207, while Gabe Vanvleet added a 182 and Andrew Lyon scored 170.

Fremont def Holton 23-7: The Packers took 4 of the 10 points in the Bakers, before rallying for the victory against Holton. Jacob Walker led Fremont with a 174, while Andrew Lyons added a 156.

Fremont def Tri-County 30-0: The Vikings did not show to last Saturday’s dual, allowing the Packers to sweep. Gabe Vanvleet posted a 200-146 combined scoring, as the Packers still rolled their games.

Fremont def Tri-County 20.5-9.5: The Packers got their chance over this most recent weekend to square off with the Vikings. It was a convincing victory. Andrew Lyon had a 175, while Gabe Vanvleet added a 169.

Fruitport def Allendale 23-7: The Trojans won last Saturday at the Kentwood Tournament. Allendale won the first Baker Game 155-131, but Fruitport secured victory in the remainder of the team games. Braden Krohn paced Fruitport with a 211-170, while Gage Wedland added a 203-184.

Ionia def Hastings 21-9: The Saxons began their season against the Bulldogs. Hastings split the Bakers, but lost the total points. They then suffered defeat in individual games. Gage Richmond led Hastings with a 178. Cam Eaton and Drew Rhodes each picked up two points as well.

Loy Norrix def Mattawan 22-8: The Knights took down the Wildcats in the season-opening match. Eric Wheeler was able to win both games for Mattawan with a 158-198. Anthony Fotis was the story in this match, dominating for Loy Norrix with a 236-245 series.

Mattawan def Kalamazoo Central 29-1: The Wildcats cruised past K Central on Saturday. Charlie Johnson scored a 209, while Cam Johnson added a 192.

Otsego def Gull Lake 23-7: The Bulldogs jumped out to the 8-1 lead, and this time they held on. Otsego won the second game by 2 pins to stay ahead for good.

Plainwell def Otsego 21-9: The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 8-1 lead, but that was nearly all of their scoring, as they suffered a defeat. Otsego had chances in both Baker games, losing by less than ten pins.

Sturgis def Niles 16-15: The Trojans were behind 15-5, but they rallied for a victory in their season opener. This Sturgis team had ten players competing for the six-man roster, so the coaching staff expects an extremely competitive season all year. Blake Adamski led the way with a 179-164, while Brayden Smoker (173) had a strong individual game.

Unity Christian def South Christian 25-5: The ‘Saders had little trouble disposing of their rival in a season-opening match. Kyler Hinkem posted a 211-170 round. Isaac Dykstra (187), Will Anama (185), and Sam Miedema (179) added to the team total.

 

GIRLS BOWLING

Central Montcalm def Fremont 29-1: The Hornets dominated Fremont last Saturday. Makayla Johnson led the Packers in defeat with a 114-119.

East Grand Rapids def FHN 27-3: The Pioneers started the season with a convincing win over FHN. Sophia Herold posted a team-high 165 for EGR, while Anna Edleman (135-100), Keely Tyrer (131-1133) and Eleanor Hileman (108-143) posted a pair of 100+ scores. FHN was led by Paige Lebster (129) and Lilly Joelsey (109-119).

East Kentwood def Lee 24-6: The Falcons cruised past Lee in a non-league game. Kyleigh Smith posted a career-high 213 game for EK.

Fremont def Big Rapids 29-1: The Packers had little trouble in defeating the Cardinals this past Saturday. Rhiannon Ziebke had a team-best 150-141 set, while Annika Yuhasz added a 140.

Fremont def Holton 21-9: The Packers swept the Bakers on their way to this non-league victory. Sophia Romine led the team with a 135-128 series.

Fremont def Tri-County 30-0: The Packers earned a forfeit win over the Vikings’ girls team. Annika Yuhasz led Fremont with a 126-113 two-game count.

Fremont def Tri-County 17-13: Fremont took down Tri-County in this weekend’s match. Sophia Romine posted a team-best 124, while Annika Yuhasz added a 113.

Fruitport def Allendale 30-0: The Trojans blanked Allendale at the Kentwood Tournament last weekend. Raegan Dykstra (170) and Brynna Hanson (160) led the way.

Hudsonville def Northview 29-1: The defending State Champions nearly swept Northview in their season debut. Kayla Bastianelli secured an individual victory by just seven pins to prevent the shutout. Ciara DeJongh led Hudsonville with a 211-188. Morgan Blouw joined her with a 194-190, while Tana Baar posted a 172-155. Madelynn Czarnowski was consistent with a 142-142.

Ionia def Hastings 17-13: The Lady Saxons bowling team also suffered a defeat at the hands of the Bulldogs. Hastings lost both Bakers, but battled back in individua play. Ally Herder and Shyanna Baker each won two games.

Loy Norrix def Mattawan 15-15: The Knights edged the Wildcats in the season-opening match. Hope Dunn leads Loy Norrix with a 181-155 series. Isabelle Mick posted the only 100+ game with a 119 for Mattawan.

Mattawan def Kalamazoo Central 30-0: The Wildcats swept the Maroon Giants in their latest match. Isabelle Mick had a 106, while Klara Kruschwitz posted a 135.

Otsego def BC Lakeview 29-1: The Bulldogs appeared to be in mid-season form as they opened their season with a near sweep of Lakeview. Amelia Loney’s 178 paced Otsego to an 8-1 lead in the first game. McKinley Kinnane led the Bulldogs in game two, as they took a 9-0 set. Chloe Vincent, an exchange student, shot a 115 in her debut.

Otsego def Plainwell 30-0: The Bulldogs shutout the Trojans last Wednesday.

Otsego def Gull Lake 27-3: The Bulldogs took down Gull Lake on Saturday, moving to 3-0 on the season.

Sturgis def Niles 26-4: The Trojans faced a Niles team with only four bowlers but overcame early nerves to secure a victory. This is a young Sturgis team with four sophomores. Chevelle Jaynes shot a 200-149 for Sturgis.

Unity Christian def South Christian 30-0: The ‘Saders blanked the Sailors in a rivalry matchup to open the season. Lauren Vander Maas (227-243) and Marissa Stanton (208-171) led Unity Christian. Annika Hendrickson (169-155) led South.

West Catholic def Allendale 30-0: The Allendale team only had two healthy bowlers, so they were unable to score in this team sweep.

 

TOURNAMENT BOWLING

East Kentwood Kickoff Classic. The host Falcons secured the boys title. After earning the #2 seed in the bracket, they took down Grandville in the semifinals. Rockford, the #1 seed, awaited them after the Rams disposed of #4 Grand Haven. In the finals, EK lost the first game 162-179, before rallying for a 213-133 win in the second game to secure the title. On the girls side, Grandville snagged the #1 seed, and they advanced to the finals by defeating GRCC. Rockford slipped past Greenville in the semifinals, before defeating Grandville 148-117 and 153-139 in consecutive games to capture the victory.

Mattawan competed at the Portage Northern Invite this past Sunday, and the boys team finished in 6th place out of 16. Charlie Johnson took 2nd individually with a 610.

OK Blue Pre-Conference Tournament. Fruitport took home the title in the pre-conference event. They scored a 3218, while Unity finished with 3017. Allendale placed third with 3003, just a pin ahead of Coopersville. West Catholic placed fifth at 2536.

Otsego competed at the Portage Northern Invite this past Sunday. Otsego’s girls finished sixth, as Alicyn Klok placed 5th in the individual competition. The boys were without four of their top seven scorers from a year ago, but they advanced into the bracket play. Facing State Finalist Niles, they suffered a first round exit.

Sturgis competed at the Interstate 8 Scotch Doubles two weekends ago, and they had a strong showing. Their boys took 11th our of 20, while their girls placed in 8th. This 8th place showing gave the Trojans a spot in the bracket play, where they lost to a solid Davison team. Christian Quirin and Kortnie Matz qualified in 3rd.

Sturgis competed at the BCW Baker’s Dozen tournament. Each team placed 9th, earning them a spot in the bracket. Sturgis’ boys team lost to #4 Davison in the opening round. The girls defeated Swartz Creek, before falling to Davison for the second time in as many weeks. This time, they made it much closer, falling by about 20 pins.

Sturgis competed at The Glenn Invitational. The Trojans saw both of their teams reach the bracket round once again. The ladies took 15th in qualifying, suffering a defeat in a decisive third game against defending Division 2 State Champion Flint Kearsley. The boys also were seeded 15th, and they upset the Swartz Creek Dragons thanks to a Collin Claar strike in the tenth frame of round 2. They faced #1 Livonia Franklin, suffering two close defeats.
