The North Muskegon Norsemen entered Friday’s game without quarterback James Young. They had some questions on offense as they kicked off against Mason County Central, but it appears that, for at least one week, the absence of Young won’t effect the win column. The Norsemen cruised to a 35-0 win over the Spartans.

In the first half, North Muskegon scored three times. Ben Meyers, on in relief of Young, contributed to all three touchdowns. The first quarter score was a 5-yard Meyers touchdown run. In the second frame, he used his arm to get points on the board. Meyers connected with Kyle Huff on a 22-yard score, and Matt Colbert on a 15-yard touchdown. This gave the Norsemen a 22-0 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Meyers and Matt Colbert connected again, this time for a 50-yard touchdown pass. Colbert would step in front of a Mason County Central pass, racing to the end zone. Ahead 35-0 late in the third quarter, the running clock went into effect. Neither team scored the rest of the way.

Ben Meyers was 7/11 passing for 147 yards and three scores. He added 4 carries for 36 yards and a fourth touchdown. Matt Colbert finished with 132 receiving yards on 6 catches, scoring twice. Nick Dana led North Muskegon with 54 rushing yards.

Xander Gajeski led Mason County Central with 46 rushing yards. Ethan Wood was 4/10 passing for 22 yards, with Peyton Merz recording 13 receiving yards.

Next week, North Muskegon will face an improving Ludington club. Mason County Central concludes its shortened 2021 campaign against Lakeview.
