The Hart Pirates and Kent City Eagles each had different opponents in their Week 2 slate on August 1. Flash forward a month, and these two are meeting up in a head-to-head non-conference showdown. The game lived up to some of its billing, as Hart stunned Kent City 30-22.
Hart got out to a fast start in this game, scoring the first fourteen points. Although Kent City would outscore Hart 22-16 the rest of the way, the damage was already done.
Turnovers plagued Kent City in this game, much like they did in the first half of their season opener against Newaygo. Instead of five turnovers like in that game, the Eagles only committed four against the Pirates. This negated the fact that Kent City gained 363 yards of total offense.
Kellen Kimes was the star for Hart, finishing 3/6 for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Leo Guadarrama anchored the Pirates’ defense with 15 tackles while Austin Martinez added 11.
Kyler Larson finished 10/15 for 104 yards, and he added 91 rushing yards on twelve carries to lead Kent City. Chase Moreno and James Farrington each recorded five tackles.
Next week, Hart will start WMC action against Montague. They are currently 2-0 for the first time since 2004. Kent City, meanwhile, will look to secure a victory against Lakeview.
