The Mona Shores Sailors’ offense exploded in their win on Friday night against Grand Rapids Union. They set a new school record with 77 points scored, besting a previous high of 65 points (also against Union, in 2016 and 2017). This 77-32 win, paired together with a Muskegon win over Zeeland West, gave the Sailors a share of the OK Green title with one game to play.

In the first quarter, Mona Shores found the end zone four times to build a comfortable lead. First, it was Brady Rose carrying the football for a one-yard touchdown. On their next drive, Rose took to the air and found Gary Humphrey for a touchdown. The Sailors would extend their lead to twenty-one when Elijah Johnson ran nineteen yards for the score. On the final play of the first quarter, Mark Konecny ran for a four yard touchdown. Sandwiched between the touchdowns was a Union touchdown pass from Tommy Stevens to Jamarion Pittman for fifty one yards to bring the score to 28-7 after the first quarter of play.

In the second quarter, the Sailors exploded for five more touchdowns. Dahmir Farnum got in on the action with a twenty-seven yard touchdown run just forty-nine seconds into the quarter. On the next possession, he caught a touchdown pass from Brady Rose for a twenty-seven yard touchdown.  This brought the lead to 42-7.

Tommy Stevens and Twanyea Smith connected for a twenty-one yard touchdown to put Union on the scoreboard in the second quarter. Mona Shores responded with a trio of touchdowns in the second quarter to balloon their lead even further. Brady Rose kept the football and ran forty-two yards for the first score. That was followed up by a pair of touchdown runs by Dahmir Farnum, on runs of thirteen and thirty-eight yards. This made the score 63-13 as the teams went to the locker room.

In the second half, the running clock was in effect, limiting the Sailors’ opportunities to score. Union would actually strike first, as Donnell Walker recovered a fumble and was able to rumble into the end zone for a score. Dahmir Farnum would respond with a sixty-five yard touchdown sprint to push the lead back out to 70-20.

Union scored two more touchdowns in a matter of seconds of game time. First, Tommy Stevens found Keaut’e Swarn for a touchdown of forty yards. Donnell Walker then recovered another fumble and took it to the end zone to make it 70-32. Before the third quarter ended, Mark Konecny ran fifty-five yards through the Red Hawks defense for a score.

Union was led offensively by Tommy Stevens, who passed for 163 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for thirty four yards.

Dahmir Farnum had just nine carries, but he racked up 232 yards and four touchdowns. In total, the Sailors had 544 rushing yards on 38 yards. The ability to rush for nine touchdowns and 14.3 yards per carry has to give the honor of Redi Rental Sailors of the Game to the entire Mona Shores offensive line.

This 77-32 victory moves the Sailors to 5-0. They will look to wrap up the conference title outright next week when they take on Zeeland West. Union (1-4) will look to bounce back when they take on Muskegon next Friday night.
