Last week didn’t come as expected for Comstock Park, as they fell to Belding. The offense was solid yet again but the defense would take a bit of a step back in the loss. In week five, they wouldn’t let previous demons hold them down for long.
Godwin Heights drew the first score of the night. Jeff Zelaya would find his way in from 6-yards away to give the Wolverines a 6-0 lead. The Panthers would strike right back. Donavon Cummings would hook up with Easton Hood on a 17-yard connection. After one Comstock Park found themselves with the lead, 8-6.
It was clear in this one that the Panthers weren’t going to find Godwin Heights lying down any time soon. The Wolverines would take the lead back after another 6-yard scamper from Zelaya at 12-6. Back came Comstock Park. Cummings would find all the open space that he could dream about, the senior signal caller would take one all the way back on a 73-yard touchdown run. This would put the Panthers up, 15-12. Back and forth we would go. Godwin Heights wouldn’t take long to respond. This time on a 2-yard plunge from Tellios Moore to give the Wolverines the lead. Comstock Park would trail at the half, 15-20.
The Panthers would come out with a spark really led by both the offense and defense to open the half. Comstock Park would grab the lone points of the quarter on a 16-yard touchdown run by Hood. The defense would compliment the offense and the Panthers would lead after three quarters of play, 22-20.
Comstock Park had their offense flowing again when Cummings connected with Spencer Dokl on a 17-yard touchdown pass. This gave the Panthers their biggest lead of the night, 28-20. The Wolverines showed no signs of a team that hasn’t won a game this year. Godwin Heights would bounce right back to tighten up the game after a 5-yard touchdown run by sophomore Kares Harris. This made it a 28-26, Comstock Park lead. Easton Hood could not have come up any bigger on the night. The big senior running back would make sure that he ended the Wolverines night without them heading home with the win. Hood would pounce his way in from 15-yards out to put the game out of reach. The Panthers go on to take this one, 35-26.
Godwin Heights will move to 0-5 on the season. For the second straight week the Wolverines had a chance in this one but it just wouldn’t be enough. They will take on Wyoming Kelloggsville next week as both teams are looking for their first win of the season. The Rockets fell to Belding, 6-58, in week five.
It was another big time performance for the Comstock Park offense. The defense continues to struggle at times but they did enough to help the Panthers offense out in this one. They will have a great opportunity to add a second-straight to the win column next week by facing a Hopkins team that fell to Sparta this week, 0-49. Comstock Park heads into that one at 3-2, while the Vikings come in at 1-4.
