Throughout the course of their history, East Grand Rapids and Lowell have played in numerous thrilling battles. One of the state’s fiercest rivalries had another epic chapter in its storybook on Friday night. East Grand Rapids’ late conversion gave them a 15-14 victory.
Scotty Millman got the Pioneers started with a short quarterback run. A successful extra point put EGR ahead 7-0. Jackson Reisbig got the Lowell offense back rolling with a passing touchdown to Brenden Whittenbach.
East Grand Rapids had an attempt late in the second quarter to take the lead with a field goal, but the 32-yard attempt was blocked. As a result, the first half ended in a 7-7 tie.
With six minutes to go, Reisbig kept the football and crossed the end zone on a 9-yard run. A successful kick pushed Lowell ahead 14-7.
East Grand Rapids got the football back, and began their march downfield. Scotty Millman found Drew Caswell open for a 13-yard touchdown. Trailing 14-13, Coach Josh Shattuck elected to go for two. Shattuck dialed up a pass play, and Scotty Millman rolled out. He found Liam O’Malley open for the go-ahead conversion.
Over the final four minutes, Lowell was unable to secure the lead. East Grand Rapids’ defense stood tall, and secured their team’s third victory. At 3-5, East Grand Rapids will be in the playoff discussion next week as they face Greenville. Lowell, now 5-3, will also feel strong about their playoff chances. The Red Arrows wrap up their season against Northview.
