Grand Haven came into Friday with only one OK-Red win in the past four seasons, and were on a 5-game losing streak. But, they still had a charged up atmosphere on Bucs Pride Cancer Awareness night at Gene Rothi Field – and they delivered in front of that atmosphere what could be a massive program-building win for third year coach Andrew Biedenbender’s team.
Grand haven led start-to-finish over the 4-2 Grandville Bulldogs, relying on a mix of dominate and mixed up offensive formations and timely defensive moments stepping up when needed to deliver a 42-28 win.
The Bucs would stop Grandville on it’s opening drive after the Bulldogs stalled out on a. drive and hunted from inside GH territory. The Bucs then took up over 7 minutes, into the start of the second quarter, to drive 78 yards before junior QB Easton Hintz would find fellow junior Amani Frierson in the left corner of the end zone for a 25 yard strike for a 7-0 lead.
Grandville answered on the ensuing drive with a Braylen Haney 1 yard TD plunge, before the Bucs struck back right before the end of the half with another Hintz to Frierson strike to make it 14-7 Buccaneers at the break.
The scoring took off in the second two quarters, as a reverse play not Samer Konda went 66 to the house on the Bucs first drive for a 21-7 lead. Grandville answered right back with a Keegan DeRidder 5 yard TD, his first of 2025 (21-13 after missed 2-point try).
Still in the third quarter, Hintz would find K.V. Korenstra next on a 4th down play, where Korenstra waved 39 yards on a short pass for a touchdown, 28-13.
Grandville went to there air out of their Power T offense for the final score of the third frame, as Jeffrey Fogelsonger found Garrett Nawrocki for a 33 yard TD pass over top of the Bucs defense to pull the ‘Dawgs back within 1 TD.
It would be Korenstra going on three straight stretch runs from a 2 RB shotgun formation to the outside to chunk the ball down the field, before plunging in from 12 out on the last of them to put the Bucs up early in the fourth 35-21. Grandville again had an answer right backwash a 2 yard pass with 6:39 left as Fogelsonger found Carter Jaarsma – 35-28.
After falling on a Bulldogs onside kick, the Bucs would move the ball up to the Grandville 40 where hey faced a 4th and 1, that’s where they moved Right Tackle Jonah Broemer to running back out of an I Formation, and the big guy would not only get the first down, but break it outside and rumble all the way to the house.
Carson Tithof would intercept Fogelsonger on the next drive, and GH would get a first down and kneel out a massive and shocking home win over a Grandville team that has now dropped two of three since losing Jayden Terry to injury.
