Last week, Grand Rapids Catholic Central was humbled at the hands of Loyola Wilmette Catholic, 45-7. This week, facing an extremely tough test in state power River Rouge, Grand Rapids Catholic Central responded with a commanding 38-6 victory.

In the first quarter, Conor Neilson started the scoring with a 32-yard field goal. Just moments later, Kellen Russell-Dixon broke free for a 24-yard touchdown to extend the GRCC lead to 10. Finally, Connor Wolf and Jami Williams paired up for a touchdown strike to give the Cougars a 17-0 advantage.

Connor Wolf continued to build the GRCC lead with a pair of second quarter scores. First, he used his legs on a 3-yard keeper. Just before the half, he found Jami Williams for another score, giving the Cougars a 31-0 lead.

The running clock was put into effect midway through the third quarter on Russell-Dixon’s second touchdown run. This one was a 1-yard plunge.

Trailing 38-0 in the fourth quarter, River Rouge finally found the end zone with three minutes to play. Michigan State commit Nick Marsh took a handoff and ran 6 yards for a score.

The Cougars even their record at 1-1 with this victory. OK Gold play begins next week with their matchup against 2-0 Wayland. River Rouge slides to 0-2 for the first time since 2009. Next week, they will take on Toledo St. John’s.
