The Zeeland West Dux and Stevensville Lakeshore Lancers kicked off week one in an early afternoon showdown. A team that has made 13 playoff appearances in a row, the Dux have their sights on yet another under legendary coach John Shillito. The Lancers, who have had their own success, would look to see if they not be just another notch on West’s schedule.

West would get the party started in a hurry just minutes into the opening quarter. Trenten Bolhouse would find nothing but clear grass en route to a 60-yard touchdown run to give the Dux an 8-0 lead. Later on in the quarter, they would add to their lead when Isaac VanderZwagg punched it in from 1-yard out. It would be 16-0, West after one.

It would be much of the same story in the second quarter. Rolando Robelin would start off the scoring for West on a 9-yard touchdown scamper making it a 24-0 game after another successful 2-point conversion. The Lancers would show life then when Matt Vaughn connected with Zach Ort to cut the lead to 24-8. It did not have an effect on the Dux, however. Back they came as Parker Hollman helped push the lead to 32-8. That’s where things would stand at the half.

The Lancers would settle in defensively in the third quarter until a Dux rushing touchdown by Keaton Hendricks would push the score to 40-8. Late in the fourth, West would find the endzone again. This time it was Brandon Hollman on an 8-yard run, making it 48-8. The younger Hollman brother would come right back with another, this time on a 10-yard interception return. That would end things, as West impresses in week one, 56-8.

Lakeshore could never get much going here as they struggled on both sides of the ball. They have a chance to rebound next week when they welcome in the Niles Vikings. The Vikings were dominant in their week one matchup defeating St. Joseph, 55-0.

The Dux start off the season on a high note. They will be right back home next week as Cedar Springs comes in. The Red Hawks fell in their opener to East Grand Rapids, 14-0.
