The Muskegon Big Reds secured a share of the OK Green title with their shootout victory over their rivals, Mona Shores. In a game filled with offensive fireworks, Muskegon emerged with a 55-35 win.
After nearly nine scoreless minutes, Muskegon struck first. M’Khi Guy kept the football, powering across the goal line from a yard out. Mona Shores would block the extra point, allowing a chance to take the lead. On their ensuing drive, Dahmir Farnum ripped off a 17-yard touchdown. Kaden Pulaski booted the PAT to put the Sailors ahead 7-6 after the first quarter.
Mona Shores would extend their lead midway through the second frame on a 16-yard Brandon Bankard touchdown carry. With just eight seconds to play before halftime, Muskegon drew even on an Octopus from Jakob Price.
The Sailors started the second half with the football, and they got off to a roaring start. Just sixteen seconds into the action, Jonathan Pittman kept the football for a 5-yard carry. Jakob Price’s 17-yard carry capped off a responding Muskegon drive, once again pulling the game even at 21.
Jonathan Pittman engineered another successful touchdown march, capping off the drive with a 1-yard carry with six minutes left in the third. This would be the last Sailors’ lead of the evening.
Destin Piggee evened the count with a 48-yard spring just sixty seconds of gametime later. On the next two Muskegon drives, M’Khi Guy found the end zone. The quarterback used his legs on runs of 39 and 1 yards to put Muskegon ahead 41-28 with 11:56 to play.
Mona Shores would draw back within six on a 23-yard Dahmir Farnum run, but a pair of Big Reds’ touchdowns iced the ball game.
With the Muskegon win, there will be three 2022 OK Green Champions: Mona Shores, Muskegon and Zeeland West.
Muskegon (7-2) and Mona Shores (7-2) will learn their playoff matchups on Sunday.
