The Wayland Wildcats’ hunt for a playoff spot sent them to a showdown with Grand Rapids Catholic Central on Friday night. Unfortunately for Wayland, they were unable to get much going offensively. Wayland suffered a 35-0 shutout defeat.
After a scoreless first quarter, GRCC struck for 21 points in the second frame. Connor Wolf got things started with a 1-yard touchdown carry. Later in the frame, Wolf found Billy Mikolay on a 16-yard passing play. Before they broke for half, Kellen Russell-Dixon ripped off a 98-yard sprint to the end zone.
In each quarter of the second half, the Cougars added scores. Jack Cook carried the football 7 yards for a score in the third frame. In the fourth, Connor Wolf and Jami Williams capped it off with a 29-yard touchdown toss.
Wayland rushed for 199 yards in this defeat. Dustin Loomans led the charge with 75 yards on the ground. The Wildcats did not complete a pass. Next week, they will look to get boost their playoff standing against Cedar Springs.
Grand Rapids Catholic Central improves to 7-1 on the year. They were led by Connor Wolf’s 207 passing yards and Kellen Russell-Dixon’s 174 rushing yards. They wrap up their regular season next week against Middleville.
