The Mendon Hornets nearly toppled Martin for a statement Week 1 win. Motivated by that close loss, Mendon delivered a phenomenal performance against Wyoming Lee on Friday night. The Hornets scored 76 points, their most since they dropped 76 on Eau Claire in the 2004 Division 7 playoff opener. Mendon’s defense was also solid, leading to a 76-12 win.

Jack McCaw picked up where he left off a week ago, scoring on a 50-yard touchdown just twenty seconds into the action. Lee would quickly respond, as Anthony Blok and Aidan Merriweather paired up for a 19-yard touchdown strike. This deadlocked the score at six.

Over the final nine minutes of the first quarter, Mendon set the tone for the rest of the game. The Hornets scored three straight touchdowns, starting with Grant Crotser and his 1-yard plunge. Gabe Haigh was on the receiving end of the next score, catching a pass from Luke Schinker and racing 81 yards for the score. Jack McCaw would return to the end zone on a 44-yard carry, and just like that, it was 30-6 Mendon.

The Hornets continued in the second quarter with four more touchdowns. Crotser (15), Owen Gorham (15), and McCaw (26 and 34) all added to the scoring tally with strong ground efforts. Elijah Beckwith rounded out the first half with a 58-yard run to paydirt for Lee. They would go into the half down by a half century, 62-12.

With the running clock in effect, Mendon scored twice in the final twenty-four minutes. First, Grant Crotser scored his third touchdown of the game in the thrid quarter. It was a 4-yard run. James Lux wrapped up the scoring with a 3-yard carry.

Mendon rushed for 444 yards on 31 carries in this game. The Hornets outgained Lee 525-231. Jack McCaw finished with 7 carries for 210 yards. Grant Crotser added 80 rushing yards, while Owen Gorham finished with 79.

Next week, Mendon (1-1) will take on Bridgman, another stout opponent in SWMFL crossover action. Lee, a new member to the SWMFL, will begin their SWMFL-II play next week against Red Arrow (New Buffalo and Three Oaks River Valley).
