The Montague Wildcats hit the road on Friday, facing a tough test in the Portland Raiders. Montague was unable to get going offensively, suffering a 31-7 defeat.
Montague’s lone touchdown came in the second quarter, after the Wildcats trailed 14-0. Andrew Kooi rushed for a 1-yard score, and he also booted the extra point. Kooi was 8/20 passing for 161 yards. Dylan Everett had 89 rushing yards, while Ian Degen added 85 receiving yards.
Portland saw Haden Getchell rush for a score and pass for another score, tallying 188 yards of offense (106 rushing and 82 passing). Caden Galey and Reis Phillips each rushed for a touchdown for the Raiders. Ethan Patrick hauled in Getchell’s touchdown pass. Madison Luxmore booted a 26-yard field goal to round out the Raiders scoring.
Montague slides to 6-3 with their defeat. The 6-3 record is their worst in the regular season since a 2014 campaign that saw them finish 2-7. Regardless, they are back in the playoffs for the seventh straight year, and the twentieth time in 21 years. Their pathway to repeating as Division 6 State Champions will be announced on Sunday evening.
