The Byron Center Bulldogs went on the road on Thursday night, as they began their 2021 campaign against Birmingham Seaholm. After the Maples got off to a fast start, Byron Center battled back and emerged with a 42-28 victory.
Seaholm scored first, as Jack Trinch ran it in for a short touchdown. They would double their lead when Colton Kinnie broke off a 15-yard touchdown run. This gave the Maples a 14-0 lead.
Byron Center began their rally with a pair of second quarter touchdowns. Trevor Walter scored the first touchdown on a 1-yard run. Hunter Schichtel evened the score with a 29-yard quarterback keeper. The teams would go into halftime with the score even at 14.
The Bulldogs continued their stellar play in the second half, as they outscored Birmingham Seaholm 28-14. Schichtel was a part of all four touchdowns, three of which he used his legs. In the third quarter, he had touchdown runs of 22 yards and 16 yards. He also tossed a 25-yard pass to Brady Breit that went for a score. Schichtel sealed the victory with a quarterback keeper in the fourth, a 76-yard sprint to the end zone.
It was a phenomenal night for Hunter Schichtel, as he finished 9/15 for 133 yards and a touchdown. He also turned sixteen carries into 196 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Owen Holverstott added 43 rushing yards for Byron Center, and Brady Breit led the receivers with 86 yards.
Next week, the Bulldogs will remain on the road when they travel to Middleville. Birmingham Seaholm will have another tough test when they face Clarkston.
