The Montague Wildcats entered the 2021 season as the defending Division 6 State Champions, but they were replacing their head coach and quarterback duo in Pat Collins and Drew Collins respectively. All of this transition would be hard for any program, but when you add in a showdown with a state powerhouse like Edwardsburg, it makes it far more difficult. The Eddies capitalized and will return home with a 38-0 victory.

Midway through the first quarter, Edwardsburg got on the board first. Connor Ostrander plunged across the goal line for a 1-yard touchdown run. The Eddies would take a 14-0 lead into the second quarter after Logan McColley rumbled for a 17-yard score.

In the second quarter, a rare pass was thrown by Edwardsburg. They capitalized on this play, as Jacob Pegura and Jacob Walker paired up for a 84-yard touchdown strike. A 24-yard field goal by Trevor Houseworth extended the Eddies lead to 24-0 as the teams entered the locker room.

Despite halftime adjustments, the outcome remained the same on the field. Edwardsburg scored at the midpoint of the third quarter with a second touchdown run by McColley. Near the end of the quarter, the Eddies scored their final touchdown when Mikey Prior ran eighteen yards into the end zone.

Edwardsburg won the total yardage battle in this game by a count of 370-197. The Eddies racked up 262 of those yards on the ground, rushing 44 times in this victory. Jacob Pegura finished 2/3 passing for 108 yards and a touchdown. Brett Allen paced the rushing attack with 75 yards on 11 carries, while Jacob Walker added 52 yards rushing and 84 receiving.

Montague saw Andrew Kooi finish 12/22 for 75 yards in his 2021 debut under center. Dylan Everett led the rushing attack with 67 yards, while Adam Baird chipped in 61. Izac Jarka led the ‘Gue receiving corps with 27 yards on five catches.

Next week, the Eddies square off with Three Rivers in Wolverine Conference action. Montague will travel to North Muskegon for their WMC opener.
