The Hudsonville Eagles began their 2020 football season on the road, and they brought home their first win of the season. The Eagles took down the Falcons of East Kentwood by a score of 21-13.
Midway through the first quarter, East Kentwood got in the scoring column first. Branden Miller, the senior quarterback for East Kentwood, kept the football and ran for a two yard touchdown. The missed extra point left the score at 6-0 in favor of the Falcons, a margin that would hold throughout the remainder of the first quarter.
In the opening plays of the second quarter, Hudsonville found the end zone for the first time and took the lead. Dylan Ham ran into the end zone from seventeen yards out. The successful extra point made it 7-6 Eagles. Hudsonville would extend their lead with an explosive fifty-seven yard touchdown run by Ham later in the second quarter. This gave the Eagles a 14-6 advantage. Hudsonville blocked a punt late in the second quarter and recovered the football inside the ten yard line just moments before halftime, but they were unable to score.
Coming out of the locker room, Hudsonville continued to extend their lead. Quarterback Brennan Hayes kept the football and ran it in from seven yards out to push the lead to 21-6. East Kentwood would respond on the ensuing kickoff, as Kylon Hunnicut went eighty-five yards to the end zone for a touchdown, but that was all their offense could muster up in the second half.
Hudsonville snapped a three-game losing streak in the series with this 21-13 victory, opening at 1-0 for the sixth time in seven seasons. The Eagles will host Grand Haven (0-1) next Friday. East Kentwood will remain at home, as they host Grandville (1-0) with their eyes set on their first victory. Both games will be broadcast LIVE on Michigan Sports Radio next Friday night.
