The Central Montcalm Hornets started off 2019 with six straight victories. They have now started 2020 off with one in a row, as they went on the road and defeated Big Rapids 12-7 in a game played at Ferris State University.

This game saw very little offense, with just one score in each of the first three quarters. Big Rapids took the early lead when Stricker tossed the football to Kidder for a thirteen yard strike. Bollman’s extra point made it 7-0 Cardinals.

Central Montcalm’s defense would not yield a point the remaining forty-three minutes of this game, allowing just two touchdowns by the offense to be enough to win the contest. Groce got things rolling with a two yard dart into the end zone on the opening play of the second quarter. The missed extra point attempt left Big Rapids in front as the game went to halftime.

Late in the third quarter, Central Montcalm scored the game-winning touchdown. Crocks connected with Hill for an eight yard touchdown that would be enough for the Hornets to win their second in a row against Big Rapids.

The Hornets had to fend off one last attack from the Cardinals late in this game. The Big Rapids offense got all the way down to the red zone with twenty seconds to play, but a crucial penalty thwarted the attack. Central Montcalm’s defense made play after play in this game, as they forced five turnovers.

Now 1-0, Central Montcalm will travel to Chippewa Hills next week in a game broadcast LIVE on Michigan Sports Radio. The Cardinals will also hit the road, as they face off against Reed City.
