Grand Valley State-bound Luke Brodnicki a fixture as Hudsonville’s defensive line anchor

HUDSONVILLE – When he’s not working in the classroom maintaining his 4.02 GPA, Luke Brodnicki is most likely on the football field. Or in the weight room. Or maybe even at the greenhouse, where he works his part-time job.

Regardless, Brodnicki gets work done, especially as Hudsonville’s 6-foot-4, 275-pound senior defensive tackle, who routinely shuts down his side of the line. 

The Grand Valley State commit is a force for his Hudsonville squad (3-1, 2-0 OK Red), which travels to Caledonia (3-1, 2-0) for a big conference matchup at 7 p.m. Friday.

“He’s a quieter guy, he’s a little shy. But, once you get to know him, he talks a lot,” said Hudsonville senior defensive lineman Hank VanderWal, who plays alongside Brodnicki. “He’s straight business. Like, he gets stuff done on the field and off the field. And I think he’s a good football player but an even better person off the field. He’s a good teammate, good person.”

Hudsonville is riding a 16-game winning streak in the rugged OK Red and Brodnicki has been a defensive anchor throughout that span. He’s a three-year varsity player for the Eagles, who actually dipped his toes into varsity football as a freshman.

During Hudsonville’s 11-1 season last fall, when the Eagles advanced to the Division 1 regional finals, Brodnicki earned MLive Grand Rapids Dream Team honors at defensive line. He recorded 35 tackles, seven stops for lost yardage, three sacks, six pass deflections, and one fumble recovery.

Through four games this season, Brodnicki has notched 22 tackles, six for lost yardage, two sacks, and one fumble recovery.

“I think (stopping) the run game is definitely a strength that I’ve had,” Brodnicki said. “I’m just genetically blessed – like, I’ve been able to hold my own. Something I’ve been working on is pass rush and developing that.”

Brent Sandee, who is in his ninth season as Hudsonville’s head coach, saw potential in Brodnicki almost immediately.

As a ninth-grader, Brodnicki played on Hudsonville’s freshman team all season but the Eagles elevated him to the varsity squad for the playoffs. Sandee said he was close to putting Brodnicki in the game against Grandville in the playoff opener. He was the next man up, per the coach.

Sandee realized then Brodnicki “was just a little bit different,” that he had a chance to be one of the really good ones to come out of the Hudsonville program.

The weight room is a sanctuary for Brodnicki, whose maxes in the explosion type of lifts well-suited for football include 365 pounds in bench press, 465 squat, 245 clean, and 495 deadlift.

Brodnicki moves well and he possesses good length for his frame. He enjoys watching the likes of NFL stars Aaron Donald and JJ Watt, the former who retired but has returned to the game and latter who remains retired.

“He’s a great kid. Really hard to move (physically),” Sandee said. “ … Last year, we thought he was pretty dominant. We put him on the strong side of our defensive line and it helps out to kind of shut down between the tight end to center – that part of the (defensive) run game for us. He’s been really effective in that. Pretty long, too, so that kind of helps out with passes and batting down balls.

“He’s on our leadership council. He has been since his sophomore year. He’s a 4.0 student and I would say he’s been the best leader that I’ve had an opportunity to coach. … It’s really nice to be able to coach him and he’s another coach on the field for us.”

The son of Steve and Beth Brodnicki intends on studying business at GVSU.

Luke Brodnicki is all business on the field, which is not lost on his teammates.

“I mean, I trust all my guys, especially Luke, that he’s going to get his job done,” VanderWal said. “(He shuts down his side of the line) so that’s great. They focus on him more and I’m not as known, so I don’t think they are worried about me as much but I think I just use it as motivation.”

Brodnicki also has been a dominant blocker at tight end for the Eagles. Sandee said that this season they’ll use him as an offensive tackle as well, such as in goal-line packages.

Brodnicki recalls picking up football in fifth grade, playing offensive guard, and the thrill it was to deliver a big block. He’s never shied from contact.

He takes a lot of pride having grown up in Hudsonville, coming through the football program, and wearing the Eagles’ uniform each week in the fall.

“We have a standard here and we like to keep that standard no matter what the circumstances are,” said Brodnicki, who reflects fondly on his high school football career.

“Super special. We’ve grown up together and we’ve built that bond since, like, kindergarten. It’s just a blessing to be out here with these boys every day, just working our tails off.”
