The second week of the MHSAA football season brought some great action once again. Below are the final scores, key stats and links to articles across our coverage area.

Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard 27 Muskegon Catholic Central 0: The Crusaders were blanked against AAGR on Friday night. The victors nearly doubled up MCC in yardage, 361-181. Timmy Raillin was the standout in defeat with 81 rushing yards and 10 tackles.

Big Rapids 41 Fruitport 14: The Cardinals return to the win column with a strong showing against the Trojans. They scored the first 34 points in this game, with a missed extra point keeping the running clock away. Garrett Foster was the lone BR player to score twice, as the diverse attack saw 101 passing yards and 204 rushing.

Byron Center 43 East Kentwood 20

Caledonia 35 Reeths Puffer 7: The Fighting Scots move to 2-0 with a dominating victory against the Rockets. Brody Betser was once again strong, throwing for four touchdowns and rushing for the fifth. He found Aaron Collins twice in the end zone, and another score went to both Lincoln Senti and Parker Little. Caledonia’s defense kept Puffer off the scoreboard, with the lone touchdown coming from an Andrew Corradin kickoff return.

Cedar Springs 32 Ypsilanti Community 28: The Red Hawks complete their eastern Michigan swing with an unblemished record, after a strong second half Friday. They yielded all 28 points in the second quarter on four Tyese Rawls touchdown passes. Rawls finished 10/19 for 212 yards. Cedar Springs relied on their resilient running attack, turning 41 carries into 309 yards, winning this contest without attempting a pass. Spencer Schoenborn had 145 rushing yards and two scores on just six carries, while Kaiden Dreyer and Rory Schoenborn also found the end zone. Noah Mallory rounded out the scoring with a kickoff return touchdown to start the second half.

Davison 41 Grandville 37

Forest Hills Central 7 Portage Central 0: The Rangers move to 2-0 with a shutout of the Mustangs. Nick Williams championed the offensive attack with 55 rushing yards and 158 yards through the air. Though his most frequent target was Brendan Cargil (four catches for 70 yards), it was Matt Sexton who hauled in the lone touchdown. Orion Roskam had 12 tackles for FHC, Micah Meadow added 10 and Matt Geib forced a fumble that Joey Vanderveen secured.

Forest Hills Eastern 35 Greenville 7: The Hawks move to 2-0 after scoring the final 35 points in this game. Greenville marched 53 yards in 11 plays on their opening drive, with Case Johnson capping off the march with a 4-yard touchdown run. FHE would cruise from there, as Brendan Thompson tossed for five touchdowns to four different receivers. He finished the night 13/19 passing for 258 yards, and Jackson Arnold was the Hawk who hauled in a pair of those five touchdowns.

Freeland 44 Bridgeport 0: It was another strong showing by the Falcons in their second week of the season. They cruise to a 44-0 victory behind 38 first half points. Max Hyne rushed for two scores, Owen Case added a pair of his own, and Zander Wheatley tossed in an octopus to spearhead this Falcons’ attack. Bridgeport was held to just four total yards of offense in defeat.

Holland Christian 37 Comstock Park 6: The Maroons move to 2-0, while pushing the Panthers to 0-2. Special teams were key for the victors, as Kaden VanHuis had a pair of field goals, including a 43-yard boot in the second half, and Holland Christian blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown. Evan Abberger added two touchdown tosses for Holland Christian. In defeat, Jace Cummings hauled in the lone Comstock Park touchdown.

Manistee 22 Fremont 12: The Mariners remain unbeaten with a win over the Packers. After trailing on a 12-0 on a pair of touchdown runs by Brayden Crosley and Khai Noordyk, Manistee scored the game’s final 22 points to emerge victorious. Neal Berry threw just six passes, but was effective, completing four for 54 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those scores went to Landin Sowa, who also had 113 rushing yards. Berry also paced the defense with 9 tackles.

Mendon 66 Britton-Deerfield 14: The Hornets cruise to their second straight victory, by scoring the first 36 points in this contest. Owen Gorham finished the night with 236 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries. Ryder Gorham added a pair of his own scores, adding 114 rushing yards on six carries. In total, Mendon rushed for 508 yards.

Twin City Sharks 60 Eau Claire 24: The Sharks cruise to victory, moving to 2-0 on the season. In victory, TCS nearly doubled up the Beavers in yardage, 541-281. Ty Johnson had a phenomenal night, with 164 yards passing and 245 rushing yards. In total, he was responsible for five touchdowns, three on the ground.

Unity Christian 37 Grayling 7

Wayland 21 Sparta 13: The Wildcats remain perfect with a narrow victory over the Spartans. Carson Reurink, the quarterback for the victors, scored on a pair of 9-yard carries. In total, Wayland rushed 51 times for 241 yards. Graden Busen was 14/23 for 177 yards and a touchdown in defeat for Sparta, with Jayden Antor adding 71 rushing yards and a touchdown.

West Catholic 63 Coopersville 28: The Falcons dominated their former league foe, scoring the first 35 points in this victory. Connor Olszewski opened the action with a punt return touchdown, and added a short scoring run later in the game. David Britenfield contributed three of his own rushing scores, and Collin Abram posted a pair of touchdown runs for the victors. All of Coopersville’s touchdowns came through the air, as Beau Harris found Brooks Hadden three times for scores.

Zeeland West 42 West Ottawa 22: Keaton Henricks had 162 rushing yards and three touchdowns for the victors. Isaac VanderZwaag matched with his own scoring trifecta, one on the ground and two receiving.
