The Caledonia Fighting Scots took on East Kentwood in their Week 8 battle. These neighboring schools have the longest history of any of Caledonia’s OK Red foes, with thrilling battles dating back to the late 2000s.
This time around, it was no instant classic. Instead, it was a solid display by the Caledonia defense, pitching its second shutout of the season in a 21-0 victory.
Caledonia scored once in the first, second and fourth quarters. First, it was a 15-yard Maddox Greenfield touchdown run that got the Fighting Scots on the board. Their lead was extended to fourteen at halftime when Brody Betser found Brock Townsend for a 55-yard touchdown strike. Finally, in the fourth quarter, Townsend broke free for a 22-yard touchdown carry. Nathan Maas was successful on all three extra point tries.
It was a big night for Townsend, who turned 17 carries into 153 yards and a score. Caledonia outgained EK 362-149, holding the Falcons to 2/9 on third down. The Fighting Scots defense forced a pair of turnovers on downs in addition to a Dallas Moody interception.
Caledonia, now 6-2, wraps up their regular season next week against Grand Haven. It will be the final Division 1 game of the season for the Fighting Scots, as they will qualify for the Division 2 playoffs. East Kentwood slides to 3-5 with this loss. The Falcons were ranked 30th in Division 1 prior to this defeat, so they still have playoff life as they head into their regular season finale. It will be absolutely vital that they defeat West Ottawa in an attempt to secure a spot.
