Grand Rapids Catholic Central captured a district championship for the seventh straight season on Friday night. They had no trouble with Berrien Springs, clipping the Shamrocks to the tune of a 56-0 rout.
GRCC scored three times in the first quarter. Kellen Russell-Dixon got things started with a 3-yard touchdown carry. On the next Cougars’ drive, he added an 87-yard burst past the Berrien Springs defense for a score. Connor Wolf and Jami Williams linked up on a quick touchdown toss to give the team a 21-0 lead.
The second quarter saw another three touchdowns added to the victors’ tally. Wolf used his legs on the next score, a one-yard plunge. Russell-Dixon would add a pair of touchdown carries from 14 and 6 yards. GRCC was cruising, ahead 42-0.
In the second half, with the running clock in effect, the possessions were limited. The Cougars’ defense scored next, as Billy Mikolay stepped in front of a Berrien Springs pass and returned the football 27 yards for a score. Finally, Sean Sullivan found the end zone on a 5-yard run.
GRCC won the total yardage battle 434-163. Russell-Dixon led GRCC with 160 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 13 carries. Wolf was 12/18 passing for 186 yards.
Next week, Grand Rapids Catholic Central will face Portland. The Raiders are 10-1 as well, with their lone loss to DeWitt.
