Gull Lake entered Week 9 just outside the Division 3 playoff picture. The Blue Devils were ranked #36, so a win against Three Rivers was the only way to keep their postseason hopes alive. Gull Lake accomplished that goal, securing a 29-27 victory.
Three Rivers got things rolling with a 9-yard touchdown pass. Gull Lake answered later in the quarter, when Ben Jackson rumbled for an 11-yard score. This left the game even at seven.
The Wildcats took the lead twice more in the second quarter with their strong rushing attack. On both occasions, Gull Lake answered. First, It was James Romyak rumbling across the goal line from a yard out. Later, it was a 41-yard touchdown pass thrown by Silas VanWormer. James Romyak ran in the two-point conversion, giving Gull Lake a 22-21 halftime lead.
VanWormer extended the lead in the third quarter, when he kept the football from a yard out. Three Rivers attempted to answer when Andrew Brown tossed a 36-yard touchdown. The Wildcats aimed to even the score with a conversion, but the two-point attempt failed. Neither team scored the remainder of the game, and Gull Lake escaped with a victory.
Gull Lake will learn their playoff fate on Sunday, hopeful that they have earned enough points to be selected in the playoffs. Three Rivers ends their year at 5-4, also with a strong belief that they will be selected for the postseason.
