The Fruitport Trojans took on Holland Christian in an OK Blue battle on Friday night. Despite falling behind early, 3-0, Fruitport was in control for the majority of this 52-16 victory.
Holland Christian got things started with a field goal of 29 yards by Adam Bergman. On the ensuing Fruitport drive, Paschal Jolman reeled off a 64-yard touchdown sprint. The Trojans would jump ahead by eleven after the first quarter, thanks to a 66-yard touchdown pass from Gavin Reames to Cody Nash in the final minute of the quarter.
Holland Christian would respond early in the second quarter, as Will Alderink snagged an 8-yard touchdown on a pass from Reeves Taylor. Fruitport’s answer was with a pair of passing scores to take a 21-point lead into halftime. Gavin Reames found Camden Ferrell and Aiden Vela on 25 and 42-yard passes respectively, giving the Trojans a 30-9 lead after two quarters of play.
In the third quarter, there was just one touchdown. Lucas Conklin was able to carry the ball three yards for a score, pulling the Maroons back within fourteen points with thirteen minutes to go.
Fruitport would seal the deal with three scores in the final frame. Reames and Vela paired up for a 66-yard strike just twelve seconds into the fourth quarter. Four minutes later, Reames used his legs for a 12-yard carry. Finally, Roan Cooper recorded his first touchdown of 2021, a 1-yard plunge with four minutes to play.
With this victory, Fruitport now sits at 3-4 on the season. They will look to return to .500 with a victory against Allendale, a club that is also 3-4 after this week. The losing slide continues for Holland Christian, as the Maroons have lost six straight games. They will look to bounce back against Hamilton on Friday.
