The South Christian Sailors were looking for a bounce-back opportunity after their offense was held in check against Grand Rapids Catholic Central. They got that chance on Friday, as their offense exploded for 62 points in a 41-point victory.
In the first quarter, South Christian’s offense exploded for three touchdowns. First, Jake DeHaan tossed a 51-yard pass to Jack Schurer. Later in the quarter, DeHaan used his legs on a 2-yard run. They rounded out the scoring with a 39-yard toss from DeHaan to Schurer. Two successful extra points made it 20-0 Sailors.
Chandler VanSolkema got the second quarter scoring started with a 31-yard run through the Wildcats’ defense. Jake DeHaan would rip off another quarterback keeper, an 18-yard score. Wayland finally got on the scoreboard with a 69-yard sprint by Ian Thompson. DeHaan and Schurer connected for the third time, and a VanSolkema two-point conversion gave South Christian a 42-7 advantage.
The second half saw a continued spark in the Sailors’ offense. Jake DeHaan and Jace DeMann linked up for an 86-yard pass, DeHaan’s fourth touchdown pass of the game. VanSolkema pushed the lead further with another lengthy touchdown run, this one a 35-yard carry. Wayland would also register a score in the third quarter, as Ian Thompson found the end zone again.
In the fourth quarter, the teams exchanged touchdowns. Jake Vermaas scored for South Christian with a 60-yard carry, his second score of the season. Wayland got a passing touchdown from Dustin Loomans to Ian Thompson.
South Christian now sits at 3-2 on the season. They will continue their campaign against Kenowa Hills next Friday. Wayland, now 0-5, will take on Grand Rapids Catholic Central in their next match-up.
