The Coopersville Broncos entered the regular season’s final week with a 6-2 record. In each contest in which their offense eclipsed 20 points, they were unbeaten. This streak was in serious jeopardy on Friday, but for the first time this season, the Broncos won a game decided by single digits. They bested Allendale, 24-21.
Beau Harris got the Broncos offense started in the second quarter, after each team failed to score in the initial frame. Harris’ 14-yard quarterback keeper gave Coopersville a 7-0 lead.
Nolan Spencer would respond for Allendale, as the senior recorded a 20-yard touchdown carry. Coopersville would capture the halftime advantage with an Evan Arnold touchdown carry of five yards.
In the third quarter, offense was limited once again. Just like in the previous stanza, Beau Harris provided the spark for the Broncos. He used his legs for a 4-yard touchdown, lifting Coopersville to a 21-7 advantage. Evan Olsen booted a 25-yard field goal on the opening play of the fourth quarter to put the Broncos ahead by 17.
Allendale staged a comeback, as Brycen Holstege hauled in a touchdown pass from 7 yards out with 7 minutes to play. With less than three minutes to go, the Coopersville lead was down to three. Allendale’s Noah Brose was the open target for their aerial attack, and the 12-yard connection made this a ballgame.
Coopersville was able to escape in the final three minutes of action to secure a 7th victory. This is the largest regular season win total for Coopersville since 2008, when they also went 7-2 in the regular season. This year’s bunch will try to best the ’08 squad by advancing past the opening playoff round.
