Double Dribble is back! The twice weekly basketball recaps will bring you the latest from around the MSR coverage area. Below are the highlights from the opening weekend.
- Calvin Christian defeated their crosstown rival Grandville 56-45. Carson DeHaan had 16 points for the Squires, while Matt Elderkin added 8. Cam Regnerus led Grandville with 27.
- Frankenmuth opened their season with a 70-39 win over John Glenn. Carson Knoll led the victors with 23 points, while Riley Hubbard added 12. Meech Ward paced John Glenn with 13.
- Fremont fell on the road against Ludington, 70-49, on Friday. Jordon McDonald paced the Packers with 25 points in defeat. Earlier in the week, they defeated Shelby behind 25 points and 12 rebounds from McDonald.S
- Fruitport Calvary Christian defeated Holton 67-40. Bradley Richards led FCC with 28 points, while Quinn Swanson added 16. Carter Brant (19) and Brodrick Fialek (11) were in double figures for the Red Devils.
- Grand Haven defeated rival Reeths-Puffer 57-51 behind 34 points from Harrison Sorrelle.
- Hart defeated Kelloggsville 68-30. The Pirates were led by Parker Hovey (22 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists) and Blake Weirich (20 points, 8 rebounds).
- Kenowa Hills bested Forest Hills Central 52-42. The Black Knights were led by Javion Otten’s 24 points. Levi McKenzie (19) and Jonas VanderWoude (12) paced FHC.
- Lowell defeated Mona Shores 71-62. The Red Arrows were led by Drew Veldman (21 points and 7 rebounds) and Aidan Fitzpatrick (16 points). Mona Shores was paced by Jonathan Pittman (15 points, 10 rebounds), JT Foster (14 points) and Jordan Bledsoe (13 points, 5 assists).
- Mason County Central defeated North Muskegon 51-44. The Spartans were led by Jayden Perrone (26 points) and Will Chye (14 points). James Young (13 points, 4 steals) and Troy McManus (11 points, 8 rebounds) led the way for the Norsemen.
- Mona Shores began their year with a win over West Ottawa, 63-58. They raced out to a 25-12 lead before holding on. Jordan Bledsoe paced Mona with 19 points, while Jonathan Pittman added a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Nash Bosma led WO with 24 points.
- Montague defeated Orchard View 62-34. Isaiah Atchison (18 points, 16 rebounds) and Owen Raeth (11 points) were in double figures for the Wildcats. Earlier in the week, they took down Newaygo 62-54. Paul Olson led the victors with 17 points, while Braeden Johnston (11 points), Owen Petersen (11) and Isaiah Atchison (9 points, 12 rebounds) added strong efforts. Bryce Decker had 26 points in defeat for the Lions.
- North Muskegon soared past Muskegon Catholic Central 52-11. The Norse were led by James Young offensively with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jaxon Lisinski added 12 points, while Troy McManus had 9 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. On defense, they held MCC to just 4/40 shooting from the field. Braden Gustin scored 7 of MCC’s 11 points.
- Oakridge had little trouble with Holton in a 65-28 win. Peyton Ruel (19 points) and Julian Primmer (10) were in double figures for the Eagles. Carter Brant (15 pts) led Holton, while Brodrick Fialek added 15 rebounds.
- Ravenna went on the load to face Benzie Central, where they saw the Huskies bury 10 triples in the first half. As a result, they suffered a 56-48 defeat. Drew Mabrito led Ravenna with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Blake Homoly added 10 points and 5 assists.
- Rockford landed a big victory over Grand Rapids Catholic Central at “The Invite” on Saturday. Andrew Landis had 32 points in the win, while Charlie Deutsch added 10. The Cougars had a trio of double-figure scorers in defeat, with Durral Brooks (25), KK Brown (19) and Caden Pokorzynski (14) leading the way.
- South Christian disposed of Holland Christian 75-34. Carson Vis did a bit of everything with 24 points, 8 steals, 6 assists and 5 rebounds. The Sailors lost to Grand Rapids Christian earlier in the week. Jake Vermaas led the Sailors with 12, while GRC got a 32 point effort out of Dono Thames.
- Unity Christian defeated Calvin Christian 67-59. TJ Fisher (16) and Hugo VanderWaal (16) led the ‘Saders. Carson DeHaan paced the Squires with 22.
- Whitehall defeated Fruitport 57-53. The offense was effective on both ends, with each team shooting at least 40%. Camden Thompson had a huge game with 30 points, 14 rebounds and 7 steals for the Vikings. Earlier in the week, the Vikings also defeated Spring Lake 64-61. In that game, Camden Thompson (19 points), Kal Koehler (15 points) and Ca’mar Ready (12 points) led the way for the victors.
- Wyoming Lee defeated Lansing Eastern 67-64 behind 36 points from Marc Whitfield.
- Zeeland East took down Plymouth 53-45. BJ Walker scored 26 points for the victorious Chix, who are now 3-0 on the year.
- Zeeland West defeated West Ottawa 61-52 in their home opener on Friday. Merritt Alderink provided highlight reel plays and big baskets on their way to victory.
