Late score for Central Montcalm prevails the Hornets over Newaygo, 21-17. The 1st half consisted of two defenses going at each other’s throats and creating pressure on the offense to develop plays quick. The only score of the half came with 4-minutes left in the 1st quarter, when Emmett Lingeman powered his way in from a yard out to score. The Hayden Train PAT is good. At the half Central Montcalm leads 7-0.

The 2nd half was a different story for both offenses. The Hornets came out of the break and moved the ball down the field. Anthony Schultz broke a 5-yard run and crossed the goal line. The PAT by Train is good. Newaygo response on the very next possession when Blake Kerr breaks a 67-yard scramble to find himself in the end zone. Josiah Long makes the PAT, to get the Lions on the board. The 3rd quarter scoring ended with a minute in a half remaining, when Long trotted on the field for Newaygo and used his right leg to put the 40-yard field goal attempt through the uprights. At the end of the 3rd, Central Montcalm 14, Newaygo 10.

In the 4th quarter, both offenses disappeared until the 4-minute mark. The Lions pushed the ball the length of the field and reached the plus 1-yard line when Kerr found the end zone once again. Long’s PAT was good. Central Montcalm showed they were not phased by the Kerr score. Isaac Johnson broke a 40-yard rush to get the ball to the 3-yard line, that set up the Schultz score. Train’s PAT was good, to secure the Hornets first conference win of the season, 21-17.

Newaygo falls to 2-6. They will host Comstock Park for their final game of the season. Central Montcalm moves to 2-6. They will face off at home against Lakeview.
