The Cedar Springs Red Hawks were hoping to grab their first win of the season after three grueling weeks. Unfortunately, they ran into a phenomenal South Christian football team. The Sailors were ready from the start, earning a 28-6 victory.
Just fifty-eight seconds into the action, the Sailors were on the scoreboard. Jake DeHaan found Charlie DeHaan for the pair’s first touchdown of the season. Their 76-yard touchdown play, paired with a Nate Brinks extra point, put South Christian ahead by 7.
In the second quarter, the Sailors struck twice. First, DeHaan and Seth Ritsema linked up for a 3-yard touchdown toss. Later, Nate Brinks carried the football into the end zone. Brinks bowled his way through the left side of the line from a yard out, giving the Sailors a 21-0 edge.
Before the first half was complete, Cedar Springs would finally score. Ryan West powered into the end zone on a 1-yard carry, bringing the halftime deficit to just fifteen points.
In the second half, offense was a premium. Just one drive resulted in a touchdown, and it came from Danny Brown’s Sailors. Nate Brinks used his legs for a second rushing score, this time a 6-yard carry.
Nate Brinks led South Christian with 103 rushing yards on 15 carries. Jake DeHaan added 71 rushing yards to a 9/16 passing performance that saw him throw for 115 yards.
Cedar Springs was led by Carter Falan on the ground with 84 yards. Rory Shoenborn added 65 yards on 10 carries, whole also completing a 21-yard pass to Ryan West.
With this win, South Christian now sits at 4-0. They will take on Middleville next week.
Cedar Springs is now 0-4 for the first time since 2008. Fortunately, that Red Hawks team won their fifth game. Unfortunately, that was their lone win, a 27-8 victory over now-closed Grand Rapids Central. The 2022 Red Hawks will hope to get win number one next week, as they take on Ottawa Hills.
