The Ashley Bears began their 2022 season with a contest against Deckerville. The Eagles are one of the area’s top teams as of late, with ten trips to the playoffs in their ten seasons of 8-man football. This year’s Eagles team looks like quite the stout group once again, as they defeated the Ashley Bears 56-14.
Ashley and Deckerville traded touchdowns early in this game, leaving the teams tied at 14. The Bears had a chance to take the lead on a passing play in the second quarter, but they dropped the potential go-ahead 11-yard toss. Deckerville would finish the second quarter with two straight touchdowns, taking a 28-14 halftime lead.
Ashley would yield four more touchdowns in the second half. Their biggest loss, however, came in the form of injuries. They lost their starting quarterback and running back in this game, and many of their players exhibited fatigue.
Logan Drummond stepped in as the relief quarterback, and he completed 4/10 passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Drummond also led the Bears in rushing with 49 yards on 11 carries. Defensively, Drummond was the leader once again. He finished with a team-high 13 solo tackles and 8 assisted tackles.
The Bears will try to snap their losing skid against New Haven Merritt Academy next week.
