The Centreville Bulldogs took on the Buchanan Bucks in their final tune-up for the playoffs. Centreville, aiming to repeat as Division 8 State Champions, bounced back from a heartbreaking loss last week with a 53-13 win over the Bucks on Friday night.
Centreville scored the first 32 points in this game to take control. In the first quarter, Tyler Swanwick got started with a 3-yard carry. It was the lone scoring play of the opening frame, as the Mason Lemings conversion gave the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead.
Swanwick doubled the lead with a 1-yard quarterback keeper just ninety seconds into the second quarter. On their next drive, Centreville saw Mason Lemings rush for a 15-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs jumped ahead 32-0 at halftime when Swanwick and Lemings paired up on a 60-yard touchdown. Lemings completed the Octopus with the conversion catch.
Early in the third quarter, Buchanan got on the scoreboard with a 27-yard strike from Connor LeGault to Brady Thompson. The Bulldogs would respond with a 16-yard carry from Gavin Bunning. This moved the tally to 38-7 Centreville with twelve minutes to go.
Swanwick and Lemings paired up for an 11-yard touchdown in the opening plays of the fourth quarter, and a run by Garrett Russell put the running clock into effect. Buchanan stopped the running clock with a touchdown pass from LeGault to Drew Glavin. Centreville would round out the scoring with a 31-yard sprint to the end zone by Xander Fredrick.
Centreville outgained Buchanan 458-181 in this game. It was a balanced offensive attack that saw the Bulldogs pass for 262 yards and rush for 196. Tyler Swanwick was 13/23 passing, and he added two rushing touchdowns on nine carries. Gavin Bunning led the rushing attack with 100 yards, while Mason Lemings’ 136 receiving yards paced Centreville.
On Sunday, the 7-2 Bulldogs will learn their playoff opponent. This will be the first team on their path to repeating as State Champions in Division 8.
