The Unity Christian Crusaders have shown each week why they are one of the top teams in Division 4. Each challenger has been sent back with a humbling defeat, and Coopersville was no different on Friday night. A nice scoring attack by the ‘Saders gave them a 69-7 victory over the Broncos.
In the first quarter, Unity Christian scored 28 unanswered points. On their first drive, Micah Bush reeled off a 27-yard sprint to the end zone. Just moments later, Drew Chandler bested that run with a 35-yard touchdown run of his own. Jonny Bosma added the conversion, his first two points of the 2021 campaign. Micah Bush (12 yards) and Cam Chandler (11 yards) each added short touchdowns in the opening frame. Coopersville would also score, as Ryan Serba hauled in a Colton Bosch pass and raced for a 12-yard touchdown.
The scoring run resumed for Unity Christian, as they scored the final 41 points in this game. Twenty-four points came in the second quarter, creating a running clock situation at halftime. Drew Chandler scored his second touchdown on a 54-yard sprint, kicking off the explosive quarter. On their next drive, Cam Chandler matched his brother with an identically long 54-yard scamper. Cam would add a 12-yard touchdown on the next drive, before Levi Tuinstra booted a 28-yard field goal. Unity took their 52-7 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the running clock limited possessions for both teams. Unity Christian scored on all three possessions, not including their final knee to end the ball game. This meant that the ‘Saders scored on the all 11 possessions in this game, tallying nine touchdowns and two field goals. Cam Chandler found Jayden DeVries on a 56-yard pass early in the third quarter, Levi Tuinstra added a 19-yard field goal, and Nate Beute ran 8 yards for a score to cap off the night.
Unity Christian outgained Coopersville 503-106 in this game, racking up 447 rushing yards. Drew Chandler led the way with 138, while Abe Rappuhn tossed in 113.
Next week, Unity Christian will look to finish their second straight undefeated regular season. Standing in their way are the Fruitport Trojans. Coopersville, losers of three straight after their 5-0 start, will look to bounce back against Hamilton.
