The East Kentwood Falcons and Grand Haven Buccaneers battled in OK Red action on Friday night. Grand Haven had an opportunity to secure some essential playoff points against a Division 1 opponent that had struggled in their first seven games. East Kentwood provided a stunner of sorts when they captured a 27-7 victory.

The first half of this game was all East Kentwood. With a minute to play in the first quarter, the Falcons rushed for a touchdown. Benjamin Cash reeled off a 15-yard touchdown run, but an unsuccessful extra point left East Kentwood ahead 6-0. The Falcons added two scores in the second quarter. First, Casey Joppie found Reginald Brown on a 19-yard toss. Later, Elijah Taylor ripped off a 21-yard touchdown run, giving EK a 20-0 halftime lead.

Grand Haven finally scored in the third quarter, as Ryan Francis powered across the goal line from four yards out. Neither offense would score the remainder of the game. Benjamin Cash stepped in front of a Bucs pass, racing 39 yards for the team’s second defensive score of the season.

Next week, East Kentwood will take on Jenison. Grand Haven, meanwhile, has a tough challenge in Week 9. The Bucs will go up against the OK Red champion Rockford Rams.
