The Caledonia Fighting Scots returned home on Friday night, looking to bounce back from their heartbreaking loss against the Rockford Rams. From the opening kickoff, the Fighting Scots set the tone, cruising to a 42-7 victory over the Jenison Wildcats.
Just ninety seconds into this game, Caledonia was on the scoreboard. Brock Townsend took a handoff and ran 14 yards for the opening score. Five minutes later, the Fighting Scots’ passing attack added to the total. Mason McKenzie found Derrick Pennington Jr on a 14-yard score. Before the quarter was up, Townsend scored again, this time a 3-yard carry. Caledonia led 21-0 after one frame.
Midway through the second quarter, Caledonia scored again. McKenzie used his legs this time, keeping the football on an 11-yard touchdown. Jenison would finally break the goal line with a pass from Caleb Dean to Jackson Sytsema. With thirty-nine seconds left in the half, McKenzie found Nick Fox on a 3-yard touchdown, giving Caledonia a 35-7 halftime lead.
On the opening kickoff of the second half, Caledonia kept their hot start rolling. Jimmie Floyd fielded the kick, and he raced 89 yards through the oncoming kick team of the Wildcats for a touchdown. The running clock was on, and the Fighting Scots cruised to victory.
Caledonia outgained Jenison 314-139 in this victory. It was a balanced attack as Mason McKenzie and Jett King combined for 111 passing yards. Brock Townsend led the rushing attack with 66 yards, while McKenzie added 52. Derrick Pennington Jr led the way with 39 receiving yards for Caledonia. On defense, Tyler Burd (6 tackles) paced the team.
Caleb Dean led Jenison in passing yards (59) and rushing yards (21). Jackson Sytsema paced the receiving core (59 yards).
With this victory, Caledonia has seven wins, their highest total since 2014. Next week, the Fighting Scots will take on Hudsonville in their regular season finale. Jenison, now 2-6, will wrap things up with East Kentwood.
