The Big Rapids Cardinals hit the road on Friday night, travelling to Remus. They faced off with Chippewa Hills, and they cruised past the Warriors, 41-8.
In the first five games of this season, Wil Strickler and Jamal Strickland paired up seven times for touchdowns. In this game, they added two more touchdown strikes to their tally. These were the first touchdowns of the game, and successful extra points by Jace Heck gave Big Rapids a 14-0 lead at halftime.
Strickler added two more scores in the third quarter of play. First, he found Justin Gorczewicz on a 5-yard touchdown pass. Three minutes later, he used his legs on a 19-yard quarterback keeper. This doubled the Cardinals lead, extending the lead to 28 points.
As the fourth quarter started, Big Rapids’ defense added to the tally. Jamal Strickland stepped in front of a pass and raced 53 yards to the end zone. A missed extra point left the score at 34-0, meaning that the running clock was not enforced.
It took just two minutes for the running clock to kick in, as Riley Vennix used his legs on a 23-yard touchdown run, his first score of the 2021 season. Chippewa Hills would avoid the shutout with a touchdown pass from Logan Davis to Easton Day. Davis would finish the scoring with a two-point conversion run.
Wil Strickler finished this game 13/20 passing for 148 yards and three touchdowns. He added a team-high 118 rushing yards on 12 carries. Jamal Strickland was the team’s top receiver with 7 catches, 77 yards, and two touchdowns.
Logan Davis was the offensive star for Chippewa Hills once again. He was only 2/7 passing, but he led the team in rushing yards (76) and receiving yards (42) as well.
Next week, Big Rapids will take on the Grant Tigers. Chippewa Hills will look for their first victory against Fremont, who is also winless.
