The Calvin Christian Squires won their 2019 opener against Wyoming Lee, 40-24. The rest of that season, the Squires lost eight times. Last fall, Calvin Christian cancelled their season. After they lost their first two games at the start of the 2021 season, they had gone over 740 days without a victory. It was with great jubilation on Friday night that Calvin Christian snapped that streak, taking down Sterling Heights Parkway Christian 25-7.
The visiting Eagles got out to an early lead in this game. They used their rushing attack to score the lone touchdown of the first quarter, a short 2-yard plunge.
For the remainder of this game, the Calvin Christian passing attack took over. Paul Bouma IV, the Squires’ junior quarterback, commanded four touchdown drives to deliver this victory. He completed 17/28 passes, tallying 316 yards and four touchdowns. Bouma also rushed for 21 yards on 10 carries.
James Daniels had 8 carries for 36 yards, and he caught two passes for 39 yards and two touchdowns. Matt Elderkin paced the receiving corps with 141 yards and two scores on 7 catches. Jace Hogan caught 6 passes to tally 92 yards. Jaxon Smith (32 yards) and Raine Daniels (10 yards) added to the stat sheet on the receiving side.
With the win, Calvin Christian improves to 1-2. They will begin OK Silver play next week against an undefeated Belding club. Parkway Christian is now 0-3 on the year. They begin MIAC play on Friday, as they face Dearborn Advanced Tech, another 0-3 club.
