The annual matchup between South Christian and Grand Rapids Christian is amongst the most storied rivalries in West Michigan. Typically, this game has been extremely competitive each fall. This year, the battle was one-sided as South Christian secured a 27-7 victory.
In the first quarter, the special teams played a key factor the Sailors. Nate Brink used his legs and booted a 48-yard field goal, giving South Christian an early 3-0 lead. Neither team would score the remainder of the half, the Sailors taking a slim three-point edge into the locker room.
With ninety seconds to play in the third quarter, quarterback Jake DeHaan used his legs for a 1-yard keeper that propelled the Sailors ahead by 10. DeHaan wasn’t done yet, as the new signal-caller took advantage with a 58-yard touchdown run. This gave South Christian a comfortable 17-0 lead.
Nate Brinks booted one more football through the uprights in the fourth quarter, and Jace DeMann recorded a second interception, bringing the Sailors to their final count of 27 points scored.
South Christian will now host East Grand Rapids in Week 2. Grand Rapids Christian will now travel to Unity Christian to square off in a non-league game.
