The Comstock Park Panthers struggled in 2020, recording just one win in seven games. In just one game in the 2021 season, they have already matched that win total. Taking on a Grant team that won a playoff game in 2020, Comstock Park sent a message with a 55-6 annihilation of the Tigers.

Scoring started in the first quarter with a touchdown run of 32 yards by Tyler DeWitt. He would extend the Panthers’ lead to fourteen points with a nice 69-yard run through the Grant defense. On the ensuing kickoff, Jose Magana weaved his way through the oncoming tacklers for a 75-yard kickoff return touchdown for Grant. Jackson Gates responded with Comstock Park’s third touchdown of the first quarter, a 5-yard run that gave them a 21-6 edge.

Gates took to the air in the second quarter, connecting with Aydin Fonseca for a 10-yard touchdown pass. He wasn’t finished, adding a third touchdown in the half when he carried the football five yards across the goal line. Comstock Park would cap off a phenomenal first half with a 21-yard run by Caden Beyerly that pushed the count to 41-6 in favor of Comstock Park as both teams went to the locker room.

With the running clock in effect, the offensive opportunities were limited in the second half. Comstock Park did manage two more touchdowns, one in each quarter. Both scores came through the air as well. Jackson Gates and Aydin Fonseca paired up in the third quarter, while Gates found Ramsey Bowser in the final frame to extend the lead to 55-6.

Defensively, this was the highest point total yielded by Grant since a 57-21 loss to Fruitport on October 10, 2008. Comstock Park eclipsed 55 points when they scored 56 in their lone 2020 win against Kelloggsville.

Jackson Gates was phenomenal for Comstock Park, completing 12/18 passes for 221 yards and 3 touchdowns, while also adding 82 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground. Tyler DeWitt turned in 115 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Aydin Fonseca led the receiving corps with 110 yards and two scores.

Comstock Park will hit the road next week, paying a visit to the Holland Dutch. Grant will begin CSAA-Gold play next week when they host Reed City.
