The Swan Valley Vikings and Bay City John Glenn Rockets squared off on Friday night in a defensive battle that went down to the final minute. In the closing minutes, Trevor Grandy‘s one-yard touchdown run with just under two minutes to play carried the Vikings to their second victory of the season.
Late in the first quarter, the Vikings got on the scoreboard first on a touchdown pass from quarterback Avery Goldensoph to Drew Kaeckmeister for ten yards to get the scoring rolling. The defenses would hold strong and it would remain 7-0 after the first quarter came to an end.
In the second quarter, big plays were made across the field by both defensive units. The Vikings blocked a field goal in this quarter when Joe Bula got his hands on the football. This was the first of two missed field goal opportunities by the Rockets in the quarter. With a couple minutes before halftime, John Glenn got on the scoreboard with a one yard touchdown run by Wyatt Weyrowske. This would leave the game at a 7-7 tie as they went to break.
After another field goal missed by the Rockets as the only real scoring threat in the third quarter, the game remained knotted at seven as the final twelve minutes began. The fourth time was the charm for William Ozdych, who booted it through the uprights from twenty-seven yards out.
The Vikings had enough time to mount one strong drive to pursue a score to win or extend this contest. After a march down the field, Trevor Grandy powered his way across the goal line from a yard out with 1:45 on the clock to deliver a thrilling victory for Swan Valley.
At 2-1, the Vikings will resume action next week when they travel to Freeland to take on the Falcons. This game will be broadcast LIVE on Michigan Sports Radio next Friday night!
