The Zeeland East Chix got their 2020 season started with a bang, as they scored a trio of first quarter touchdowns. This was the spark plug for their first win of the year, a 48-13 victory over the Union Red Hawks.
Cebastian Hunderman started the scoring for Zeeland East with an eighteen yard touchdown run just minutes into the game. Paige Westra kicked the extra point to make it 7-0 Chix. Ethan Houghtailing extended the lead when he ran thirteen yards to the end zone. Westra again booted the extra points to make it a fourteen point contest. Before the first quarter was done, Adam Cassel added to the total with a touchdown run of his own, pushing the lead to 21-0.
The offense picked up in the second quarter, as five touchdowns were scored. Union finally broke through the end zone on a sixty-six yard run by Jamarion Pittman. It took the Chix all of forty seconds to respond, as Sam Cochran caught a pass from Houghtailing for an eighteen yard score. Houghtailing would throw two more touchdowns in the second quarter, one to Derek Pennington and the other to Hunderman. A passing touchdown from Tommy Stevens to Da’Quin Freeman for sixty-five yards in the closing minute of the first half made it 42-13 Zeeland East as the teams went to the locker room.
In the second half, there was only one touchdown. Houghtailing connected with Sam Cochran for the pair’s second touchdown of the game to bring the game to its final tally of 48-13. Houghtailing finished this night with a very impressive five touchdown outing.
The Chix will hit the road next week to take on Wyoming. The Wolves (0-1) were handily defeated by Zeeland West 60-20 in their season opener. As for Union, the Red Hawks will travel to Zeeland West to take on the Dux.
