The Kent City Eagles started the season against the Newaygo Lions. A fast start to the game with 28 unanswered points carried them to a 42-22 victory.
Early in the first quarter, Logan Thompson ripped off a pair of touchdowns to give the Eagles some cushion. He first used some power on a short 5-yard carry. On the next drive, Thompson broke off a 41-yard touchdown run.
Kent City continued their momentum with a 1-yard touchdown carry by Andre Meade. The lead grew to 28 when Thompson completed his hat trick with a 46-yard sprint to the end zone. Newaygo finally stopped the run when Trevor Garbrecht bowled across the goal line from two yards out. Kent City would push the lead to 34-6 at the half when Cooper Stinson crossed the goal line from five yards out.
With a comfortable lead, Kent City saw a more methodical approach offensively. Andre Meade did score the end zone once again, as his 7-yard carry pushed the lead to 36 and began the running clock.
In the fourth quarter, Newaygo scored two touchdowns. Damone Moore scored the first touchdown on a 16-yard carry, and in the closing seconds, Tyson Holden scored on a 9-yard run.
Next week, Kent City will take on Godwin Heightske. Newaygo will look for their first win next week against Central Montcalm.
