The Central Montcalm Hornets took on Berrien Springs, stepping out of CSAA play for a non-league bout. It was a tough battle against the Shamrocks, but in the end, Central Montcalm secured a 22-9 win.
Late in the first quarter, the Hornets struck first. McCoy Wernholm was able to give Central Montcalm the lead, rushing the ball three yards across the goal line, and a successful two-point try put them ahead 8-0.
Berrien Springs would respond, but not until the midway mark of the second quarter. Caiden Ward was able to put three points on the board, burying a 26-yard field goal.
Central Montcalm extended their lead before the break with a quick touchdown run. Wernholm returned to the end zone with an explosive 36-yard touchdown sprint. As a result of another strong conversion, the Hornets led 16-3 at the break.
Neither team found the scoring column in the third quarter. With eight minutes to play, Wernholm completed his hat trick. This was his shortest touchdown run, a 3-yard carry, and Central Montcalm led 22-3.
Berrien Springs would quickly respond with a touchdown pass from Micah McFarland to Walter Williams, but that was all they could muster in the final minutes of this contest.
With the victory, Central Montcalm improves to 4-1. Next week, they get their biggest conference test in a battle against Kent City. Berrien Springs, now 2-3, will square off against Buchanan in an LAC battle.
