The upset minded Central Montcalm Hornets nearly pulled off a thriller over unbeaten Tri-County in week six. Central Montcalm held on until late but wouldn’t be able to pull it off for the Vikings. This week they would take it all out on their week seven opponent.
Midway through the opening quarter the Hornets would strike first. Anthony Schultz would run one in from 5-yards out. This would give Montcalm a 7-0 lead after the good PAT. Late in the quarter, back came the Hornets. McCoy Wernholm would find a score of his own from 5-yards out. This put the Hornets up 14-0 after one quarter of play.
Montcalm decided to strike early in the second quarter. Not even a minute into the quarter the Hornets would build the lead to 21-0 after Wernholm found his way in from 20-yards away. Montcalm held all the momentum and would continue to add to that in the quarter. Wernholm would reach the endzone for the third time in the half, this time on a 9-yard scamper. All Hornets to that point, 28-0. They weren’t done yet. Looking to deliver another big blow Schultz would find the endzone again on a 4-yard run. Montcalm would cruise into the half holding a 34-0 lead.
It was a Hornets offense that was on par the entire night. They would get things started early in the second half when Schultz connected with sophomore Jamison Johns on a 26-yard strike. This would make it a 41-0 Montcalm advantage. The ground game was dominant all night for the Hornets. For the sixth time on the night, the Hornets would add another. Joey Morrow would deliver the final blow in this one on a 4-yard run. Both defenses would limit the offenses in the final quarter as we wouldn’t see anything in the score books. Central Montcalm goes on to win in a big way over Grant, 48-0.
Anthony Schultz led a potent ground attack for the Hornets by racking up 147 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on the night. He added a passing touchdown to the resume. McCoy Wernholm put together a big night of his own with 105 rushing yards on 11 carries to go with 3 touchdowns. Jamison Johns added a receiving touchdown.
Grant could never get anything going offensively on the night. They would be held to just five first downs on the night and went on to cough the ball up three times. The Tigers will move to 1-6 on the season. Things have not been easy for Grant much of the season and they won’t. They’ll face a Reed City team that has won three in a row. The Coyotes are coming off their most impressive performance of the season in a win over Kent City.
This one was big for the Hornets as they end a two-game slide with the win. They move to 3-4 but will need to move on quickly as they face a Newaygo team that is coming off their best offensive performance of the season on Friday night. The Lions head into that one at 3-4 in what should be a big matchup between two teams looking to get to .500 on the year.
