Coopersville entered Friday night with a 2-2 record. They were only a few plays away from a 3-1 or even 4-0 mark, with late defeats coming in each of the past two weeks. On Friday, they looked to right the ship against Unity Christian, who has had their own struggles in the first four weeks.
The ‘Saders got the scoring started with a short touchdown run. Coopersville would respond with a touchdown carry by Isaac Lemieux. After one quarter of play, Unity held an 8-7 lead.
Unity Christian would maintain control of this game with a pair of touchdowns early in the second quarter. Sandwiched in between was a Nick Gordon touchdown run for the Broncs. Cayden Stanton and Lemieux would score for Coopersville to push them ahead 28-23, but Unity took a 31-28 lead into the locker room with another short rushing score.
After the half, this game was all Coopersville. Gordon returned to the end zone with a 56-yard touchdown play, pushing the Broncos ahead by four. They followed that up with a Ben Harris touchdown run from 5 yards out.
Ahead by 11 heading into the fourth quarter, Lemieux completed his hat trick with a 47-yard sprint to paydirt. Arnold capped off the scoring with a 4-yard plunge for the victors. Coopersville brought home a convincing 56-31 victory.
The 56 points for Coopersville are the most the club has scored since 2018, when they beat Fruitport 62-50. Now 3-2 on the year, Coopersville will meet up with Hamilton next week. Unity Christian falls to 1-4 with this defeat. It is the first time they have lost four of their first five contests since 2006. Next week, the ‘Saders have Fruitport on tap.
