The Lawton Blue Devils continued their hot start with another blowout victory. Lawton’s scoring average actually dropped with their 52-0 victory. Now the Blue Devils are averaging 56.8 points per game. On defense, they pitched their fifth shutout in their win over Schoolcraft. They have yielded just 61 points in eight games.
Carter Cosby got Lawton started with a short touchdown run. Landon Motter and Chase Mitchell paired up on a 56-yard passing score. The remainder of the evening saw Jake Rueff seize the control. Rueff had 16 carries, racking up 303 yards and scoring six touchdowns. This increases Rueff’s lead in the statewide touchdown race. In eight games, Rueff has 32 rushing scores. This has him amongst the 40 greatest scoring seasons in MHSAA history, as he is tied with Lowell’s Ryan Esbaugh (2004) for 37th place. The state record is 53, held by Pewamo-Westphalia’s Jared Smith (2015).
Next week, Lawton wraps up the regular season against Saugatuck. The final game of the regular season precedes the postseason, as the Blue Devils attempt to make a run in the Division 7 playoffs. Schoolcraft, now 2-5 on the year, will wrap up their season against Delton next week. This will be the first time since 2008 that the Eagles miss the playoffs.
