The Zeeland East Chix and Union Red Hawks each entered Friday night’s game with 3-2 records. It was a stunning result to many on Friday, that the Chix were able to coast to a 38-6 victory.
Midway through the first quarter, the special teams unit got Zeeland East on the scoreboard. Levi Boersma fielded a punt, and he raced 22 yards to the end zone. Later in the quarter, Brady White fielded a handoff and ran six yards into the end zone. This gave the Chix a 14-0 lead after twelve minutes of play.
Zeeland East continued to build their lead in the second quarter. On the first play, Austin Keur found the end zone on a 6-yard run. He would add another rushing score, a 7-yard carry, later in the frame. Max Cochran used his legs for a 9-yard touchdown with ninety seconds until halftime.
Trailing 35-0, Union got on the board on the final play of the first half. Jermiah Bridgeman found Keaunt’e Swarn on a 5-yard touchdown toss, moving the halftime count to 35-6 in favor of the Chix.
There was just one scoring play in the second half of this game. With 11 minutes left to play, Paige Westra booted a 33-yard field goal.
Zeeland East now sits at 4-2 on the season. The Chix will take on Wyoming next week. Union slides to 3-3 with this defeat. They have a tall task next week, with Zeeland West on the calendar.
